Zinc Scrap FAQ

How can you tell if a metal item is actually zinc rather than aluminium?

Short answer: Zinc die-cast is noticeably heavier than aluminium for the same size (zinc is roughly two and a half times denser), tends to be duller grey rather than aluminium's brighter silvery finish, and — unlike aluminium — is not magnetic but also doesn't bend or dent as easily as aluminium; a simple weight comparison against a known aluminium item of similar size is often the most practical test for an individual seller.

Why weight is the most practical test

Zinc’s density (around 7.1 g/cm³) is substantially higher than aluminium’s (around 2.7 g/cm³) — an item that feels surprisingly heavy for its size, compared to what you’d expect from aluminium, is a strong indicator it’s actually zinc.

Visual and physical differences

Zinc die-cast tends to have a duller, greyer appearance compared to aluminium’s brighter shine, and zinc alloy is generally more brittle — it’s more likely to crack than bend under stress, unlike aluminium which tends to dent or bend more readily.

When to just ask a buyer

If you’re still unsure after checking weight and appearance, most scrap buyers can identify material on sight from experience — bringing an uncertain item in for assessment is a reasonable fallback rather than guessing and mis-sorting it.
